Phytotherapy for treatment of cytokine storm in COVID19

چکیده

In 2020, a novel strain of coronavirus (COVID-19) has led to significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. As the date this writing, total 116 M cases been diagnosed worldwide leading 2.5 deaths. The number mortalities is directly correlated with rise innate immune cells (especially macrophages) in lungs that secrete inflammatory cytokines (IL-1? IL-6) development “Cytokine Storm Syndrome” (CSS), multi-organ-failure death. Given currently treatment condition rare release effective vaccine might be months away, here, we review plants their pharmacologically active-compounds as potential phytopharmaceuticals for virus induced response. Experimental validation effectiveness these natural compounds prevent or reduce cytokine storm beneficial an adjunct SARS-CoV-2.

Dynamics of a Cytokine Storm

Six volunteers experienced severe inflammatory response during the Phase I clinical trial of a monoclonal antibody that was designed to stimulate a regulatory T cell response. Soon after the trial began, each volunteer experienced a "cytokine storm", a dramatic increase in cytokine concentrations. The monoclonal antibody, TGN1412, raised serum concentrations of both pro- and anti-inflammatory c...

Targeting the "cytokine storm" for therapeutic benefit.

Inflammation is the body's first line of defense against infection or injury, responding to challenges by activating innate and adaptive responses. Microbes have evolved a diverse range of strategies to avoid triggering inflammatory responses. However, some pathogens, such as the influenza virus and the Gram-negative bacterium Francisella tularensis, do trigger life-threatening "cytokine storms...

A New Shield for a Cytokine Storm

Highly virulent influenza virus infection results in excessive cytokine production, recruitment of leukocytes, and immune-mediated pulmonary injury. Teijaro et al. (2011) now demonstrate that sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor 1 ligands suppress all features of flu-inflicted pathological inflammation and place the endothelium at the center of this regulatory network.

Agents to reduce cytokine storm

The increasing insight into pathomechanisms of dysregulated host response in several inflammatory diseases led to the implementation of the term "cytokine storm" in the literature more than 20 years ago. Direct toxic effects as well as indirect immunomodulatory mechanisms during cytokine storm have been described and were the basis for the rationale to use several substances and devices in life...
